Hunt Results for the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area, Wednesday – 1/13/16, Saturday – 1/16/16 and Sunday – 1/17/16

As expected the bird bag numbers for the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Wednesday rose some compared to Sunday’s regular low numbers. Shovelers held on to the first position for number of birds taken with Green Wing Teal jumping back into the second position. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Wednesday, 1/13/16 were as follows:

141 adult and 5 junior hunter shot 63 Northern Shovelers, 14 Cinnamon Teal, 27 Gadwall, 14 Widgeon, 52 Green Wing Teal, 4 Mallards, 12 Pintail, 2 Canvasbacks, 4 Bufflehead, 1 Merganser and 3 Ruddy Ducks. 39 Snow Geese and 13 Canada Geese were also checked in at Wister on Wednesday. 4 Coots were also included in Wednesday’s bag. This worked out to an average take of 1.34 ducks per hunter or, with the Geese and Coots included, 1.73 waterfowl for each hunter. Out of 100 reservation cards issued 24 showed up on time for their spot.

Saturday’s per hunter waterfowl average for the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area ticked up slightly from Wednesday’s numbers. Green Wing Teal took over the first place for number of ducks bagged with Shovelers slipping back to the second spot.  The Wister Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/16/16 were as follows:

197 adult and 27 junior hunters bagged 83 Northern Shovelers, 35 Cinnamon Teal, 19 Gadwall, 22 Widgeon, 155 Green Wing Teal, 6 Mallards, 20 Pintail, 2 Ring Necks, 1 Scaup, 6 Bufflehead, 2 Goldeneye, and 20 Ruddy Ducks. In addition 57 Snow Geese and 16 Canada Geese were taken at Wister on Saturday. A lone Coot was also checked in at Wister on Saturday. This came out to an average of 1.66 ducks per gun or, with the Geese and Coot added in, 1.99 waterfowl for each gun. Out of 100 reservation cards issued 39 checked in on time for their spot.

Sunday’s average take of waterfowl for the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area, as usual, dropped somewhat compared to Saturday’s numbers. Green Wing Teal held on to the first position for number of birds bagged with Canada Geese taking over second position.   The Wister Staff reported that the results for Sunday, 1/17/16 were as follows:

66 adult hunters and 7 junior hunters bagged 7 Northern Shovelers, 2 Cinnamon Teal, 3 Widgeon, 10 Pintail, 30 Green Wing Teal and 1 Redhead. 9 Snow Geese and 17 Canada Geese were also bagged on Sunday at Wister. No Coots were checked in at Wister on Sunday. This worked out to an average of 0.73 ducks per hunter or, with the Geese added in, 1.08 waterfowl per person. Out of 100 reservation cards issued 13 were there on time for their spot.

Wister is open for waterfowl hunting on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays only. At this point in the season it is now too late to put in for reservations on-line through the DFW Automated License Data System (ALDS).   You can still get in on the daily “sweat line” drawing for the remaining blinds by arriving at Wister to get in on the drawing by 10:30 PM the night before. Reservation spots are given out starting at 3 AM and the “sweat line” spots given out after that.

Don’t forget that all licenses and 1 day, 2 day or season passes must be purchased at a DFW Office or a license agent before your arrive at the refuge. These can be purchased on-line via the ALDS system also, however, you will have to wait for the DFG to mail you’re the actual licenses and passes which can take up to 15 days. If you purchase your license and passes in person at a DFW office or license agent you immediately get them without the wait for the mail. No licenses or passes will be sold at the check stations this season. You can also show up for an afternoon refill hunt but the last refill is at 2 PM.
