San Jacinto Wildlife Area’s 23rd Annual Junior Waterfowl Hunt on Saturday, February 4th, resulted in a fair average bag for each of the Junior Hunters that took to the field. Cinnamon Teal were the number one bird harvested by the Juniors with Green Wing Teal showing up in the second spot. Tom Trakes, from San Jacinto Wildlife Area, reported that the waterfowl harvest for the Junior Hunt on Saturday, 2/4/17, was as follows:
77 junior hunters checked in with 19 Northern Shovelers, 5 Mallards, 4 Gadwall, 5 Widgeon, 2 Pintail, 25 Green Wing Teal, 27 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Redhead, 1 Ring Neck, 4 Bufflehead, 2 Goldeneye and 8 Ruddy Ducks. There were no Geese bagged at the Junior Hunt on Saturday. The Juniors brought in 5 Coots to the check station on Saturday. This worked out to an average of 1.34 ducks per Junior Hunter or, with the Coots added in, 1.40 waterfowl per Junior Hunter. Tom advised that out of 52 reservations issued 21 showed up on time for their spot.
SoCalHunt was privileged to attend the Junior Hunt this year and I’ll be posting a report on the breakfast, lunch and raffle as soon as I can write it up. As is San Jacinto’s tradition it was an outstanding event with lots of prizes and food for all in attendance. Look for a post on it here in the very near future.
