Hunt Results for Kern National Wildlife Refuge, Saturday – 1/29/22

The average harvest of waterfowl at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge for Saturday dropped quite a bit from Wednesday’s great average. Shovelers reclaimed first place for number of birds checked in with Green Wing Teal dropping back to the second spot. The Kern NWR Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/29/22 were as follows:

81 adult and 5 junior hunters came away with 80 Shovelers, 2 Mallards, 9 Gadwall, 35 Widgeon, 24 Pintail, 77 Green Wing Teal, 18 Cinnamon Teal, 5 Redheads, 1 Canvasback, 2 Bufflehead, 1 Eurasian Widgeon, 1 Blue Wing Teal, and 1 Ruddy Duck. 1 White Fronted Goose was downed at Kern on Saturday. No Coots were taken at Kern on Saturday. This came out to an average bag of 2.98 ducks per hunter or, with the Goose included, 2.99 waterfowl per gun. Out of 7 reservation cards issued 7 hunters showed on time to claim their spot.

Well, that’s it for the 2021/2022 regular waterfowl season. Junior hunters have one more chance at those elusive waterfowl, on Saturday, February 5th. If you’re a junior hunter or you have a junior hunter in the family you can hunt Kern’s Junior Waterfowl hunt on Saturday, 2/5/22. Here’s hoping the Juniors have a great hunt! If your junior hunter doesn’t have a reservation for the Junior Hunt he or she can still get in on the drawing for the remaining blinds after the reservations are taken care of. Reservation spots are given out at the Hunter Check Station on the Refuge 2 ½ hours before local shoot time and the “sweat line” drawing is performed 2 hours before shoot time, the day of the hunt, also at the Refuge Hunter Check Station.

If you’re a Veteran or an Active Duty Military Member you also have one more chance this season. The after season Veteran/Active Duty Military hunt which will be held on Saturday, February 12th. Hopefully our Vets and Active Duty Heroes will take advantage of this opportunity. Here’s hoping our Vets and Active Duty have a great hunt! If you’re a veteran or active duty military and don’t have a reservation for the veteran/active duty hunt you can still get in on the drawing for the remaining blinds after the reservations are taken care of. Heads Up! Special Notice for regulations for the Upcoming San Jacinto Wildlife Area Junior Hunt

Tom Trakes wanted me to get the word out to all the Junior Hunters and their adults regarding the regulations that the SJ Staff have to go by for the upcoming Junior Waterfowl Hunt on Saturday, February 5th. Tom wanted to get the word out on this as they simply DO NOT want to have to turn away any Junior Hunter just because they (or their responsible adult) didn’t know.

There are some state and federal regulations that everyone needs to be aware of for Junior Hunters participating in the SJWA Junior Waterfowl hunt.

Participation in the Junior Hunt is limited to Junior Hunters that are under 18 years old on February 5th. This means that if a Junior Hunter’s 18th birthday is on Feb 5th or before they cannot participate in the Junior Hunt.

Any Junior Hunter that is 16 or over on February 5th need the following
in addition to their regular hunting license:

#1 – A California Waterfowl Validation.

#2 – A Federal Duck Stamp.

#3 – A California HIP (Harvest Information Program) Validation.

#4 – A Type “A” Area Pass.

If the Junior hunter will be 16 or over on February 5th and doesn’t have these four items in addition to their regular hunting license GET THEM NOW! Don’t wait! No passes or stamps are sold at the check station and BY LAW the Junior hunter that is 16 or over cannot participate in the hunt without them. Let’s not let anyone get disappointed and make sure everyone has all their ducks in a row (pun intended) so no one gets turned away.

Remember all Junior Hunters must have an adult (non-hunting of course) with them in the blind for the Junior Hunt, at least one adult per blind. If you don’t have a reservation, be sure you’re at the check station (17050 Davis Rd., Nuevo, CA 92567) at 3 AM to get in on the Sweatline Drawing.

Hopefully, this clarifies what the requirements are for the Junior Hunters to participate in the great event, and no one will be disappointed and turned away.

Hunt Results for the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area, Wednesday – 1/26/22, Saturday – 1/29/22, and Sunday – 1/30/22

The average waterfowl bag at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Wednesday jumped back up from Sunday’s usual low average. Green Wing Teal held on to first place for the most birds bagged with Shovelers taking back sole possession of second place. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Wednesday 1/26/22 were as follows:

121 adult and 4 junior hunters took home 67 Northern Shovelers, 1 Mallard, 29 Gadwall, 37 Widgeon, 30 Pintail, 90 Green Wing Teal, 27 Cinnamon Teal, 9 Ring Necks, 7 Bufflehead, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Blue Wing Teal, and 7 Ruddy Ducks. 2 Snow Geese were harvested at Wister on Wednesday. 5 Coots were checked in at Wister on Wednesday. This worked out to an average bag of 2.45 ducks per hunter or, with the Geese and Coots added in to the total, 2.50 waterfowl per hunter. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 25 hunters showed up on time to get their hunting spot.

The waterfowl average take at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Saturday dropped back just a hair from Wednesday’s average. Green Wing Teal were still in first place for most birds bagged with Shovelers still found in the second position. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/29/22 were as follows:

263 adult and 5 junior hunters took 112 Northern Shovelers, 1 Mallard, 34 Gadwall, 58 Widgeon, 43 Pintail, 231 Green Wing Teal, 76 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Canvasback, 7 Ring Necks, 4 Scaup, 24 Bufflehead, 5 Blue Wing Teal, 1 Mexican Black Duck, 2 Mergansers, and 19 Ruddy Ducks. 4 Snow Geese were downed at Wister on Saturday. 8 Coots were taken at Wister on Saturday. This came out to an average bag of 2.31 ducks per gun or, with the Geese and Coots added in, 2.35 waterfowl per person. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 47 hunting parties showed up in time to claim their spot.

The average waterfowl harvest at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Sunday nosedived as compared to Saturday’s average. Green Wing Teal, again, were found in first place for the most birds checked in with Shovelers, also again, holding the second spot. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Sunday, 1/30/22 were as follows:

123 adult and 3 junior hunters bagged 20 Northern Shovelers, 4 Mallards, 5 Gadwall, 11 Widgeon, 9 Pintail, 39 Green Wing Teal, 8 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Canvasback, 2 Ring Necks, 1 Blue Wing Teal, 5 Bufflehead, and 17 Ruddy Ducks. No Geese were taken at Wister on Sunday. 7 Coots were downed at Wister on Sunday. This came out to an average take of 0.97 ducks per person or, with the Coots worked into the total, 1.02 waterfowl per gun. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 20 hunters arrived on time to claim their hunting spots.

So, the 2021/2022 regular waterfowl season is in the books. Junior hunters have two more chances at the ducks at Wister, next weekend, February 5th and 6th. If you’re a junior hunter or you have a junior hunter in the family you can get in on the Junior Waterfowl hunt on Saturday and Sunday, 2/5 & 2/6/22. If your junior hunter doesn’t have a reservation for the Junior Hunt weekend he or she can still get in on the sweatline drawing, just like any regular hunt day, by showing up at Wister to get in on the drawing by 10:30 PM the night before. Hunt Results for San Jacinto Wildlife Area, Saturday – 1/29/22

The waterfowl average take at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area for Saturday jumped upward from Wednesday’s average under mostly cloudy skies with temperatures ranging from the high 30s to the mid-60s. Shovelers retained first place for number of birds checked in with Green Wing Teal remaining in the second position. Tom Trakes, from San Jacinto Wildlife Area, reported that the results for Saturday, 1/29/22 were as follows:

176 adult and 4 junior hunters took home 160 Northern Shovelers, 13 Mallards, 33 Gadwall, 8 Widgeon, 30 Pintail, 116 Green Wing Teal, 20 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Scaup, 5 Bufflehead, and 32 Ruddy Ducks. There were no Geese bagged at San Jacinto on Saturday. 77 Coots were also checked in at San Jacinto on Saturday. This came out to an average bag of 2.32 ducks per hunter or, with the Coots included, 2.75 waterfowl per gun. Tom advised that out of 52 reservation cards issued 24 hunters were on time to claim their spot.

Hunt Results for Kern National Wildlife Refuge, Wednesday – 1/26/22

The average bag of waterfowl at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge for Wednesday jumped upward from Saturday’s very good average.  Shovelers and Green Wing Teal swapped places today putting the Green Wing Teal in first place for number of birds taken with the Shovelers dropping back into the second spot.  The Kern NWR Staff reported that the results for Wednesday, 1/26/22 were as follows:

66 adult and 2 junior hunters harvested 94 Shovelers, 6 Mallards, 10 Gadwall, 16 Widgeon, 36 Pintail, 118 Green Wing Teal, 15 Cinnamon Teal, 2 Redheads, 11 Bufflehead, and 2 Ruddy Ducks.  2 White Fronted Geese were bagged at Kern on Wednesday.  4 Coots were also downed at Kern on Wednesday.  This worked out to an average bag of 4.56 ducks per gun or, with the Geese and Coots worked in, 4.65 waterfowl per person. Out of 7 reservation cards issued 5 of them showed up on time to get their spot.

At this point in the season, it is now too late to put in for reservations online through the DFW Automated License Data System (ALDS).   You can still get in on the daily “sweat line” drawing for the remaining blinds after the reservations are taken care of.  Reservation spots are given out at the Hunter Check Station on the Refuge 2 ½ hours before local shoot time and the “sweat line” drawing is performed 2 hours before shoot time, the day of the hunt, also at the Refuge Hunter Check Station.

Don’t forget that all licenses and 1 day, 2 day or season passes must be purchased at a DFW Office or a license agent before your arrival at the refuge.  These can be purchased online via the ALDS system also, however, you will have to wait for the DFG to mail you the actual licenses and passes which can take up to 15 days.  If you purchase your license and passes in person at a DFW office or license agent, you immediately get them without the wait for the mail.  As in past seasons, no licenses or passes will be sold at the check stations this season.

No Geese were taken at San Jacinto on Wednesday. 4 Coots were also downed at San Jacinto on Wednesday. This figured out to an average bag of 1.75 ducks per gun or, with the Coots included, 1.78 waterfowl per person. Tom advised that out of 52 reservation cards issued 27 hunters claimed their spot on time.

The average bag of waterfowl at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge for Wednesday headed upward again from Saturday’s very good average. Shovelers remained in first place for number of birds checked in with Green Wing Teal still holding the second spot. The Kern NWR Staff reported that the results for Wednesday, 1/19/22 were as follows:

60 adult hunters and 1 junior hunter came away with 132 Shovelers, 1 Mallard, 14 Gadwall, 13 Widgeon, 30 Pintail, 48 Green Wing Teal, 3 Cinnamon Teal, 2 Redheads, 8 Bufflehead, and 1 Ruddy Duck. A single White Fronted Goose was taken at Kern on Wednesday. There were no Coots checked in at Kern on Wednesday. This came out to an average harvest of 4.13 ducks per hunter or, with the Goose added in, 4.15 waterfowl per person. Out of 7 reservation cards issued 6 hunters arrived on time to get their spot.

The average take of waterfowl at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge for Saturday slid back a little as compared to Wednesday’s great average. Shovelers were again in first place for number of birds bagged with Green Wing Teal still holding the second spot. The Kern NWR Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/22/22 were as follows:

65 adult and 5 junior hunters took home 130 Shovelers, 5 Mallards, 14 Gadwall, 25 Widgeon, 32 Pintail, 44 Green Wing Teal, 4 Cinnamon Teal, 4 Redheads, 12 Bufflehead, 1 Eurasian Widgeon, and 2 Ruddy Ducks. No Geese or Coots were downed at Kern on Saturday. This figured out to an average bag of 3.90 ducks per person and, of course, with no Geese or Coots to add in, 3.90 waterfowl per gun. Out of 7 reservation cards issued 5 hunters arrived on time to get their spot.

The average waterfowl take at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Wednesday jump back upward from Sunday’s usual low average. Shovelers were back in first place for the most birds checked in with Green Wing Teal still holding on to second place. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Wednesday 1/19/22 were as follows:

115 adult and no junior hunters came away with 56 Northern Shovelers, 3 Mallards, 21 Gadwall, 25 Widgeon, 25 Pintail, 50 Green Wing Teal, 16 Cinnamon Teal, 4 Redheads, 5 Ring Necks, 5 Bufflehead, 1 Merganser, and 9 Ruddy Ducks. 7 Snow Geese were bagged at Wister on Wednesday. 1 Coot was taken at Wister on Wednesday. This came out to an average take of 1.91 ducks per person or, with the Geese and Coot worked in to the total, 1.98 waterfowl per hunter. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 35 hunters arrived on time to get their hunting spot.

The average waterfowl bag at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Saturday rose slightly from Wednesday’s average. Green Wing Teal took over first place for most birds checked in with Shovelers sliding back to the second position. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/22/22 were as follows:

220 adult and 4 junior hunters checked in with 89 Northern Shovelers, 10 Mallards, 54 Gadwall, 26 Widgeon, 39 Pintail, 165 Green Wing Teal, 29 Cinnamon Teal, 3 Redheads, 1 Canvasback, 1 Ring Neck, 1 Scaup, 6 Bufflehead, 3 Goldeneye, and 23 Ruddy Ducks. 6 Snow Geese were taken at Wister on Saturday. 2 Coots were downed at Wister on Saturday. This figured out to an average take of 2.01 ducks per hunter or, with the Geese and Coots included, 2.04 waterfowl per gun. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 38 hunters showed on time to claim their spot.

The average waterfowl harvest at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area for Sunday headed back downward as compared to Saturday’s average. Green Wing Teal remained in first place for the most birds taken with Shovelers and Snow Geese in a tie for the second spot. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Sunday, 1/23/22 were as follows:

68 adult hunters and 1 junior hunter took 10 Northern Shovelers, 4 Gadwall, 5 Widgeon, 6 Pintail, 25 Green Wing Teal, 1 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Bufflehead, and 6 Ruddy Ducks. 10 Snow Geese were checked in at Wister on Sunday. 7 Coots were bagged at Wister on Sunday. This figured out to an average harvest of 0.84 ducks per gun or, with the Geese and Coots added into the total, 1.09 waterfowl per gun. Out of 104 reservation cards issued 16 hunters came in on time to claim their hunting spots.

Wister is open for waterfowl hunting on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. At this point in the season it is now too late to put in for reservations on-line through the DFW Automated License Data System (ALDS). You can still get in on the daily “sweat line” drawing for the remaining blinds by arriving at Wister to get in on the drawing by 10:30 PM the night before. Reservation spots are given out starting at 3 AM and the “sweat line” spots given out after that.

The waterfowl average take at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area slipped back even further from Wednesday’s fair average under sunny and windy conditions with temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the mid-60s Shovelers retained first place for number of birds checked in with Green Wing Teal, once again, found the second spot. Tom Trakes, from San Jacinto Wildlife Area, reported that the results for Saturday, 1/22/22 were as follows:

162 adult and 10 junior hunters took home 90 Northern Shovelers, 12 Mallards, 29 Gadwall, 5 Widgeon, 17 Pintail, 50 Green Wing Teal, 6 Cinnamon Teal, 2 Ring Necks, 3 Bufflehead, and 12 Ruddy Ducks. There were no Geese bagged at San Jacinto on Saturday. 13 Coots were also taken at San Jacinto on Saturday. This came out to an average harvest of 1.31 ducks per hunter or, with the Coots included in the total, 1.39 waterfowl per gun. Tom advised that out of 52 reservation cards issued 23 were claimed on time.

139 adult and 9 junior hunters checked in with 98 Northern Shovelers, 8 Mallards, 21 Gadwall, 7 Widgeon, 12 Pintail, 43 Green Wing Teal, 11 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Canvasback, 2 Ring Necks, 1 Scaup, 15 Bufflehead, and 8 Ruddy Ducks. No Geese were downed at San Jacinto on Wednesday. 9 Coots were taken at San Jacinto on Wednesday. This figured out to an average bag of 1.53 ducks per person or, with the Coots added in, 1.59 waterfowl per gun. Hunt Results for Kern National Wildlife Refuge, Saturday – 1/15/22

The average waterfowl take at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge for Saturday slid back a little compared to Wednesday’s great average. Shovelers stayed out front in first place for number of birds taken with Green Wing Teal still holding the second spot. The Kern NWR Staff reported that the results for Saturday, 1/15/22 were as follows:

56 adult and 2 junior hunters harvested 110 Shovelers, 9 Gadwall, 20 Widgeon, 17 Pintail, 40 Green Wing Teal, 2 Cinnamon Teal, 7 Redheads, 1 Ring Neck, and 14 Bufflehead. No Geese were bagged at Kern on Saturday. A single Coot was bagged at Kern on Saturday. This worked out to an average take of 3.79 ducks per person or, with the Coot included, 3.81 waterfowl per gun. Out of 7 reservation cards issued 5 hunters showed in time to get their spot.

Green Wing Teal remained in first place for the most birds taken with Shovelers still in the second place. The Wister Staff reported that the results for Wednesday 1/12/22 were as follows:

96 adult and 2 junior hunters harvested 59 Northern Shovelers, 3 Mallards, 22 Gadwall, 15 Widgeon, 30 Pintail, 71 Green Wing Teal, 11 Cinnamon Teal, 3 Ring Necks, 3 Bufflehead, 1 Wood Duck, and 15 Ruddy Ducks. 2 Snow Geese were checked in at Wister on Wednesday. 3 Coots were downed at Wister on Wednesday. This figured out to an average bag of 2.38 ducks per gun or, with the Geese and Coots added in, 2.43 waterfowl per person. Out of 104 reservation cards issued only 18 hunters showed up on time to claim their spot.

169 adult and 9 junior hunters bagged 74 Northern Shovelers, 3 Mallards, 15 Gadwall, 10 Widgeon, 23 Pintail, 109 Green Wing Teal, 21 Cinnamon Teal, 7 Ring Necks, 1 Scaup, 10 Bufflehead, 1 Blue Wing Teal, 1 Merganser, and 7 Ruddy Ducks. 6 Snow Geese were bagged at Wister on Saturday. Also, 9 Coots were checked in at Wister on Saturday. This worked out to an average harvest of 1.58 ducks per person or, with the Geese and Coots included, 1.67 waterfowl per hunter. 160 adult and 13 junior hunters went home with 157 Northern Shovelers, 11 Mallards, 42 Gadwall, 11 Widgeon, 21 Pintail, 56 Green Wing Teal, 2 Cinnamon Teal, 1 Canvasback, 10 Bufflehead, and 6 Ruddy Ducks. No Geese were checked in at San Jacinto on Saturday. 26 Coots were also bagged at San Jacinto on Saturday. This came out to an average harvest of 1.83 ducks per hunter or, with the Coots added in, 1.98 waterfowl per person. Out of 4 reservation cards issued all 4 hunters arrived on time to claim their spot.

52 adult and 4 junior hunters checked in with 125 Shovelers, 1 Mallard, 14 Gadwall, 14 Widgeon, 15 Pintail, 53 Green Wing Teal, 4 Redheads, 1 Rink Neck, and 7 Bufflehead. A lone Snow Goose was bagged at Kern on Wednesday. 1 Coot was also checked in at Kern on Wednesday. This worked out to an average take of 4.18 ducks per gun or, with the Goose and Coot included in the total, 4.21 waterfowl per gun.
